Latin originated some 3,000 years ago in Lazio, a region located in central Italy, spreading throughout the Roman Empire. After the fall of the latter, Latin remained for several centuries as a written language.

In the 7th century, the so-called Vulgar Latin begins to differentiate in each region of the former Empire, giving rise to the first phases of the current Romance languages. The dates of their first testimonies as new languages oscillate between the eighth and twelfth centuries.
However, Latin continued to be used in culture and science until the 18th century.

In the 19th century, it was definitely replaced by these Romance languages that had already become national languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian, etc.) and it only remains until today as an official language in the state of the Vatican.

Currently Latin is still used in biology, for the nomenclature and classification of species and groups, and also in law, philosophy and medicine.

The Romance languages, daughters of Latin, form a set of languages that have many similar words (60-80%), so they are highly intelligible with each other.
