Life originated on our planet about 3.9 billion years ago

Certain scientific theories affirm that life, or organic compounds related to it, were contributed by one of the many comets, meteorites and asteroids that collided with Earth.

Other theories, such as that of the "prebiotic soup" indicate that the primitive atmosphere of the planet, which contained water vapor (rain) and elements such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia, methane, etc., allowed matter to evolve: some microscopic molecules reproduced and associated, originating very elementary unicellular organisms (bacteria type) capable of adapting to extreme living conditions; they lived in water and at first were anaerobic since oxygen was scarce.

1,200 million years later, there was an increase in this gas, with which the atmosphere, enriched by its energy, made possible the proliferation and mixing of those unicellular beings.

About 700 million years ago the first multicellular organisms appeared.

Natural selection, genetic variations, the interaction between these organisms and their ability to evolve led to the birth of different species. Some are extinct but others are the predecessors of the current ones:

In Devonian (407-362 million years): ammonites; diverse and large fish in the sea. Animals and plants - corals, sea lilies, horsetails, ferns, mites, spiders, scrorpions and the first amphibians - begin to spread out of the water over the territories of the islands and the two great continents, Laurasia and Gondwana.

In the Permian period (289-246 million years): large forests of pine and fir trees, archosaurs and numerous varieties of reptiles.

In the Jurassic (207-145 million years): Numerous varieties of dinosaurs reaching large sizes, iguanodons, large ferns, cycads, ginkgoes and conifers (pines, yews, araucarias), giant sequoias. First birds (with teeth and claws) as well as pterodaustros (flying reptiles) and first mammals.

In the Cretaceous (145-66 million years): The great dinosaurs continued, until their disappearance as a result of the collision of a meteorite about 65 million years ago. Appearance and development of flowering plants and trees. Increase in insects. Lines of reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals emerge that are ancestors and similar to the current ones.

In the Paleocene (65-54 million years): marsupial and placental mammals predominate.

In the Eocene (55-37.5 million years): The first marine mammals (cetaceans) appear and large ungulate and marsupial mammals proliferate; there are large reptiles.

In the Oligocene (37.5-23.5 million years): Tropical floras are replaced by temperate forests. The evolution of mammals continues

In the Miocene (23.5-5 million years): Vast grasslands are formed and mammals culminate their evolution, birds acquire strange shapes and giant sizes.

In the Pliocene (5-2 million years): Mammalian migrations occur. Huge running and carnivorous birds and gigantic sharks become extinct

In the Pleistocene (2 million to 12 thousand years): The great glaciations occur. Many plants and animals become extinct: climate changes affect vegetation, leading to the extinction of many mammals such as the mammoth, the dinoterium and the woolly rhinoceros, the saber-toothed tiger, etc., although other mammals reach their maximum development.

In the Holocene (12-10 thousand years to year 0): At the beginning the climate is still cold and dry (although between 9,000 and 5,000 there is a notable warming; the extinction started in the Pleistocene continues. The predominance of the human species, which continues today.
