The beginning of a new year invites us to reflect on the events that have taken place over the past, not only last year, but of the entire history of humanity and also of the events that await us in the future ...

And although in Spain today and in several advanced countries of the Western world (Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, etc) we now live a period of remarkable peace and progress, it is necessary to remember that in many other regions of the planet the armed conflicts and that the violation of human rights affects millions of people who suffer serious deficiencies and attacks against their life and their physical and moral integrity (murders, injuries, rapes, arbitrary arrests, persecutions and social segregation, racism, xenophobia, hunger , poverty, contagious diseases, unemployment, labor exploitation, lack of decent housing, lack of schools, highly polluted and unhealthy environments, insecurity, unjust and corrupt governmental systems, etc.)

It should also be remembered that wars are and have been one of the greatest tragedies (perhaps the greatest) that have afflicted human beings since time immemorial: armed conflicts, with all their associated negative consequences (deaths, injuries, violations, arrests arbitrary, robbery, looting, destruction of buildings, fires, diseases, epoque, forced emigration, etc) have accompanied, with just a few peaceful truces, the majority of our lives as human beings.

Surely tribal combats and fights between hominids more or less sapiens have occurred since prehistoric times, but it is in the last 4,000 years (period of which we have more or less documented evidence), when several hundred bloody armed conflicts have taken place (wars , battles, invasions, conquests, crusades, genocides, enslavements, witch hunts, etc.), which have caused more than 400 million deaths as well as a similar number of mutilated, sick, missing, subjected to slavery or forced labor, etc.

More than half of these victims were not military, but civilians from the invaded areas who could not avoid the consequences of the fighting and who on numerous occasions were expressly massacred by the "enemy" troops

And it is in the last centuries where consequences of a greater severity are produced in order to the number of victims and the magnitude of the damages due to the fact that more and more powerful and lethal weapons are being used (artillery, tanks, airplanes, submarines, warships, bombings, missiles, attacks with nuclear weapons, etc.) or diabolical genocidal methods (mass executions, massacres, extermination camps, etc.)

During the twentieth century, especially because of the terrible effects of the First and Second World Wars, there were almost 100 million deaths of which between 70 and 80% were civilians .

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In view of the historical panorama described, it is difficult to adopt hopeful attitudes for current and future times, since many of the negative factors that led to the violent social struggles and tensions of the past persist: political ambitions, eagerness for power, political and religious fanaticisms, injustices, imbalances economic, etc

But it is necessary to appeal from all the inhabitants and places of the planet to the leaders and political leaders of any country to avoid hostile confrontations as much as possible and seek, through dialogue, agreements to achieve peace and respect for the human rights.

And that they dictate urgent and effective measures to eradicate situations of poverty and improve the lives of people.
